The Brixham Fish Market tours have been a popular stable of Brixham harbour for many years. Allowing members of the public to get a first-hand experience of the Brixham Fish Market and the fishermen who call it home. However, since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, the tours have been unable to run due to a combination of COVID safety concerns and key long-serving organisers wishing to step down.

Recently Tristan has been approached by the current organisers and Brixham Trawler Agents to take over the organisation and running of the world-famous Brixham Fish Tours.

About Brixham Fish Market

Brixham Fish Market lands the biggest catch by value in England, with a regular turnover of more than £25 million a year. Over 40 species of fish and shellfish are regularly landed, one of the most diverse catches around the coast of the UK. Perfect marine conditions provide some of the best quality seafood in the world.
Buyers include local fishmongers and restaurants, alongside national and international companies who supply top restaurants and supermarkets. Approximately half of the seafood sold at the auction is exported worldwide.

You can take a look behind the scenes during a guided tour of the market. You'll need to be up early to catch one as tours start when the auction opens at 6 am. In 2019 the traditional 'shout' auction was upgraded to a brand new online clock auction, the first in the world, which continues to keep Brixham at the forefront of the international fishing industry.

Brixham Fish Market Tours – Plans for 2022

It is still early days in the organisation of the return of the Brixham Fish Market tours, so we don’t yet have all the details. Initially, Tristan plans to run the tours in a similar way to previous years, but he also has plans to introduce some exciting new changes to ensure all participates get the absolute most of the experience.
Tristan’s goal is to provide tours that are as authentic as possible to day-to-day life on Brixham Fish Market. For those who regularly watch Tristan’s Facebook live streams, you will be aware of just how authentic and straight-talking Tristan is, the guided tours will be no different.

Guided tours will be led by Tristan Northway, or on occasion another very experienced local fisherman, and will include a tour of the market, a chance to chat with Tristan about his life as a fisherman and then a fishy breakfast at a local restaurant. Tours have historically included up to 30 people, but we are hoping to be able to offer slightly smaller tour groups of around 10-15 and then provide tours more often than in previous years. Details of this will be confirmed over the coming months.

In the meantime, if you would like to find out more about the life of a fisherman and gain a close insight into the Brixham Harbour fishing fleet then check out the Brixham Fish Club by Adela.
